Blues side to face Ospreys confirmed
A young Cardiff Blues side has been selected to face the Ospreys on Saturday, 6.30pm kick off, in the LV=Cup
The Blues are currently their in their pool having lost to Bath away and drawn in Exeter at home, however, Blues Forwards Coach, Justin Burnell, sees Saturday’s game as chance for many of the Blues Academy players to display their rugby ability.
Speaking ahead of the match Burnell said, “The match is a massive opportunity for some of our youngsters to show what they are capable of, especially as we aim to move the region forward, bringing youngsters through into our senior squad.
“They have been training up at the Vale of Glamorgan training centre this week and I’ve been very impressed with a lot of the youngsters who are in our national under 20’s squad.”
“The likes of Cory Hill, Macauley Cook and Lewis Smout have huge potential. There are some very good youngsters coming up through our system, so we are very excited about that.”
“When you look at some of the players we have had in our Academy: Sam Warburton, Jamie Roberts, Bradley Davies, you see a lot of similarities with players coming through, which is hugely encouraging.”
“With some players you can definitely see the potential at an early age and this match gives us the chance to see how they come through in the live environment.”
“At the moment in training they are doing everything in the right manner, but they will obviously be put under pressure in a game and we will see how they react.”
“Whether it be the Under 16’s, 18’s or 20’s squads any game which involves the Blues versus the Ospreys there’s sure to be a massive rivalry and rightly so.”
“One of the good things about Welsh rugby is the rivalry and we have really got to keep the traditional derbies going.”
“There’s also a lot of pride at stake.”
Junior tickets for the match are priced at only £1 making the match an attractive proposition for families. Family Tickets (two adults and two children) are priced at only £12 while adult tickets are £10 and student tickets only £5.

WALES SQUAD FOR 2011 RBS 6 NATIONS
Warren Gatland and his coaching team have named the 28-man Wales squad led by captain Matthew Rees to contest the 2011 RBS 6 Nations Championship.
The Scarlets hooker is retained at the helm of a squad which includes five uncapped players and is also joined by the fit again contingent of wing Shane Williams, full back Lee Byrne (both Ospreys), centres Jamie Roberts (Blues) and Jonathan Davies (Scarlets) and Blues wing Leigh Halfpenny.
Scarlets playmaker Rhys Priestland is the only uncapped player in the backs and he is joined by three-times capped speedster and fellow Scarlet Morgan Stoddart, making his first squad appearance since facing Canada in 2008.
Sale scrum-half Dwayne Peel is also recalled after missing out in November with the suspended Richie Rees (Blues) making way.
The inclusion of the Scarlets pair, injury comebacks and the reduced size of the squad, means there is no room for Dragons wings Aled Brew or Will Harries, Blues wings Tom James or Chris Czekaj or Ospreys pivot Dan Biggar. From the 35-man squad selected last Autumn Ospreys wing Tom Prydie also misses out with Scarlets flier George North currently also absent through injury.
Up front there are a further four uncapped players with Dragons back row Toby Faletau and Blues prop Scott Andrews retained, but Ospreys prop Ryan Bevington and Scarlets back row Josh Turnbull added to the squad.
Dan Lydiate and fellow flankers Sam Warburton (Blues), Jonathan Thomas (Ospreys) and Andy Powell (Wasps) provide more of the back row firepower.
The other back five players are locks Alun Wyn Jones (Ospreys), Bradley Davies (Blues) and Ryan Jones (Ospreys), meaning veteran Blues back row Martyn Williams, Ospreys lock Ian Gough are both edged-out on this occasion.
In the front row, Osprey Paul James is also retained alongside regional colleagues Craig Mitchell and Bevington and Blues prop John Yapp.
The two hookers in the reduced squad are captain Rees and Osprey Richard Hibbard, with Hibbard’s regional colleague Huw Bennett losing out.
Mike Phillips (Ospreys) and Tavis Knoyle (Scarlets)are retained alongside Peel to make up the contingent of three scrum-halves .
Scarlets fly-half Stephen Jones keeps his spot and Osprey James Hook – normally a centre but also considered as a fly-half and full-back – joins Roberts and Davies who make their returns at centre at the expense of Tom Shanklin (Blues) and Andrew Bishop (Ospreys) who are both ruled out through injury.
And Gatland is hoping for both a performance and a result the nation can be proud of when next up opponents England visit the Millennium Stadium for the RBS 6 Nations opener in a fortnight’s time.
“We have deliberately kept the squad as small as possible and have reverted back largely to the philosophy we had during the Grand Slam year in 2008,” said Gatland.
“We want to keep intensity levels up in training and have ensured that we are not carrying players with injury. Everyone here is fighting fit and able to take a full part and challenge each other for selection.
“It’s a boost to have one or two players back from injury in the backline with Shane (Williams) and Lee (Byrne) both doubts at one stage and Leigh (Halfpenny) and Jamie (Roberts) returning after being unavailable to us in the Autumn, there’s an exciting look about the backs.
“Up front, its well documented that we have lost a couple of players in the front row, but that gives opportunities to others to put their hands up and we are pleased with the options we have got in the pack.
“The forwards have been going pretty well and we have decided to give a couple of youngsters a chance this tournament but that doesn’t mean there is no way back for those who have missed out.
“We are conscious that we need now to begin to realise our potential and that means winning some games.
“It all starts against England at the Millennium stadium in a fortnight and they don’t come much bigger than that.
“We have a pretty good record against them in recent years and enjoy playing against them, especially at the Millennium Stadium and it is a game that could really set the tone for the season ahead for both sides and in a World Cup year that’s all the at needs to be said.”

Davies delighted to see Magic return to Wales
Welsh rugby legend and sports commentator Jonathan Davies has thrown his support behind Millennium Magic and the return to Cardiff for the full first round of Engage Super League XVI fixtures on February 12 and 13. All seven opening games of the Engage Super League season are returning to the Millennium Stadium, where the Magic Weekend begun in 2007, following a two-year spell at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
“To have Millennium Magic back in Wales is great for Cardiff and Rugby League in Wales,” said Davies. “It will benefit all of the unsung heroes of Rugby League in Wales. All of the Academies and the development officers have the opportunity to show Rugby League at its best to the whole region
“It is the first round of Super League and it’s a great way to kick-off the season with a big bang.
“To start with so many local rivalries will be very exciting. The opening round of Super League is the first chance for fans to see how all the teams perform and they will all be wanting to make their mark.”
Millennium Magic kicks off in Cardiff with four games on Saturday February 12, the same day as a Six Nations international involving Wales, but Davies hopes that rugby union fans manage to catch some of the Rugby League action on offer at the Millennium Stadium.
“Although Millennium Magic weekend is on at the same time as the Six Nations Wales v Scotland game, which will be popular in Wales, I hope fans in the vicinity can catch the Super League action,” said the former Warrington and Widnes player.
“It is a great opportunity for the rugby union fans who travel to Cardiff to also see some of the Magic Weekend. After the Wales rugby union game they can wander in and still catch some world class rugby with Wigan v St Helens, which is always an outstanding fixture.
“Tickets are great value which is even more reason not to miss out. When Crusaders RL moved to Wrexham it meant there was no Super League in South Wales so it will be great to see the season start with quality Rugby League in Cardiff.
“There are some fantastic local derby matches and it is a chance for Rugby League to make a big impression on Wales.”
There will be high expectations for Welsh Engage Super League club Crusaders RL following their success on the field last season and they are hoping the Welsh public show their support at Millennium Magic.
“Crusaders performed extremely well last season and they have set the standard so there is pressure and expectations for this year,” said Davies.
“It is nice to see a young coach been given an opportunity and I am looking forward to seeing Iestyn Harris perform in his head coach role at Crusaders.
“It’s been tough for Crusaders off the field but as the season starts they will have to put that behind them and work on moving forward.”

Tom Shanklin out for three months
Cardiff Blues and Wales have been dealt a blow with the news that Tom Shanklin will require knee surgery that will keep him out of action for three months.
Speaking at the Pavilion Training Centre, Cardiff Blues Director of Rugby, David Young, said,
“Unfortunately Tom has had a scan and needs another operation on that troublesome knee which will keep him out for three months.”
“Most people saw against Aironi that he wasn’t right out there and that’s why he had to come off .The knee started to swell up straight after the game.”
“We sent him for the scan and the medics thought he needed an operation to sort the problem out. The recuperation period is 12 weeks minimum.”
“He should be back by the end of March, beginning of April, and has to get fit, so he may feature in some of our games at the end of the season.”
“Obviously, I’m sure he wants to come back as soon as possible to stake a claim for the World Cup with Wales.”

Scotland’s junior performance pathway is now the most successful performance environment in Britain, and Ellinore’s appointment is seen as a major coup for Wales.

Cardiff Blues not to appeal Richie Rees ban
Having received the written submission from the ERC regarding the 12 week ban imposed on Blues Scrumhalf Richie Rees, Cardiff Blues will not be appealing against the decision.
An independent Disciplinary Hearing in Dublin on Thursday, 6th January, 2011, upheld a citing complaint made by the Citing Commissioner for the match, Murray Whyte, that Richie Rees had made contact with the eye area of Northampton Saints hooker, Dylan Hartley.
Rees pleaded not guilty to the complaint on the basis that any contact had been accidental. However, the independent Judicial Officer, Pat Barriscale (Ireland), reviewed all of the evidence and concluded Rees was guilty of foul play in contravention of Law 10.4(m) in that he had made contact with the eye/eye area of Mr Hartley. The Judicial Officer found that the contact had been reckless but not intentional and also found that the offending was at the low end of the level of seriousness for an offence of this type, and having taken into account all aggravating and mitigating factors imposed a suspension of 12 weeks.
Richie Rees is free to play again on 31st March 2011.
Speaking of the decision Rees said;
“Having sought legal advice, with the support of the Blues and WRU, we have decided not to appeal against the decision.”
“Naturally I am disappointed at the outcome of the hearing and to be suspended for 12 weeks. Missing out on the Six Nations and some crucial games for the Cardiff Blues is hugely disappointing and hard to accept.”
“I felt it was worth looking at the possibility of an appeal as I am desperate to play for the Blues and Wales and naturally feel frustrated and disappointed at the outcome.”
“However, I will now be concentrating on training hard in anticipation of the Magners League run in for the Blues in March and April and hopefully can still be part of the Rugby World Cup preparations with Wales.”

Cardiff Blues and Wales scrum half Richie Rees banned for 12 weeks.
Cardiff Blues and Wales suffered a blow today when scrum half Richie Rees was banned following an ERC disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Thursday. Rees was found guilty of making contact with Dylan Hartley's eye in Cardiff Blues' defeat to Northampton Saints on 19th December. The ban comes as a blow for Cardiff Blues who declined to comment further on the issue until Rees has decided whether or not to appeal against the decision. However, Wales coach Warren Gatland will also be disappointed as the ban covers the entire Six Nations period. Rees is currently deputy for Mike Phillips and was used to good effect in the Autumn international series. The full ERC statement is below:
Richie Rees, the Cardiff Blues player (No 9), appeared before an independent Disciplinary Hearing in Dublin today (Thursday, 6 January, 2011) as a result of the citing complaint arising from the Heineken Cup Pool 1 match against Northampton Saints at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday, 19 December, 2010.
The citing complaint made by the Citing Commissioner for the match, Murray Whyte (Ireland), was for acts contrary to good sportsmanship in contravention of law 10.4(m) in that Mr Rees had made contact with the eye/eye area of Northampton Saints hooker Dylan Hartley (No 2) 30 minutes into the first half.
Mr Rees pleaded not guilty to the complaint on the basis that any contact had been accidental. The independent Judicial Officer, Pat Barriscale (Ireland), reviewed all of the evidence, including several angles of the incident from television footage and medical statements relating to the injuries sustained by Mr Hartley.
The Judicial Officer heard oral evidence from Mr Hartley (by telephone) and Mr Rees, and also heard submissions on behalf of Mr Rees from Cardiff Blues’ Chief Executive, Robert Norster, and on behalf of ERC Disciplinary Officer, Roger O’Connor.
The Judicial Officer determined that Mr Rees was guilty of foul play in contravention of Law 10.4(m) in that he had made contact with the eye/eye area of Mr Hartley. The Judicial Officer found that the contact had been reckless and not intentional.
The Judicial Officer found that the offending was at the low end of the level of seriousness for an offence of this type, and having taken into account all aggravating and mitigating factors imposed a suspension of 12 weeks. Mr Rees is free to play again on 31 March, 2011.

WALES RUGBY WORLD CUP WARM-UP TICKETS ON SALE
The hottest rugby tickets in town this summer, for Wales’ Rugby World Cup warm-up showdowns at the Millennium Stadium against the flare-filled Barbarians, the auld enemy England and the might of Argentina, go on public sale tomorrow (Friday) from 12 noon.
Wales will be limbering up for the Rugby world’s showpiece tournament in New Zealand with a Cardiff fixture list – as well as an away clash against the English at Twickenham - which has a mix of everything any rugby fan could wish for, from scrum and line-out purists to try-time fanatics.
The games, which for the first time offer a new under 18s enclosure at just £15 per head and will host a family of four for as little as £70 (Argentina), £100 (Barbarians) and £110 (England), will be head coach Warren Gatland’s final chance to fine-tune his Rugby World Cup squad, which must be announced by Monday 22nd August 2011.
Gatland will take a squad of up to 40 players on three separate training camps in the lead up to the matches and he must then whittle that number down to just 30 players who will board the plane to New Zealand, with just these final games on home soil remaining to help him make some of the most important decisions ever asked of an international coach.
His first opportunity comes against the instinctively attack-minded Barbarians on Saturday 4th June, where players will be given their first opportunity of the summer to bid for RWC spots.
Traditionally Baa-Baas games are the most spectacular of them all, but when you add a Wales side, hoping to peak at just the right time in 2011, into the mix fans can expect fireworks and sparks to fly.
“The first thing for the squad players to do is impress us physically and in rugby terms on the training camps, then the opportunity comes against the Barbarians,” said Gatland.
“They are always an unknown quantity and we won’t really know what to expect from them until that first whistle goes, but that is the attraction of Baa Baas rugby.”
Wales then cross the Severn Bridge to face England on the 6th August, before the clash that means the most to many in Wales as our nearest neighbours and oldest rivals hit the heartland of the Cardiff Capital on Saturday 13 August in the return clash.
“England are one of the toughest opponents in Northern Hemisphere rugby and playing back to back home and away fixtures against them is the ideal preparation for the Rugby World Cup,” said Gatland.
“We will be testing ourselves physically and mentally against one of the very best teams in the world, who have a great RWC cup pedigree as previous winners and finalists on two occasions
“Both sides will hope to be nearing the peak of their powers and that combined with the long held and traditional rivalry that exists between the two nations should make it a fantastic game for the fans.”
Finally on Saturday 20th, before the kit bags are packed and the plane leaves for one of the greatest sporting shows of them all just a few short weeks later, the Pumas will pack down at Wales HQ.
Last time the sides met a Shane Williams double try effort saw Wales seal a 33-16 victory, but can they do it again in a game which will be the final RWC appetizer on home soil.
The Pumas represent Gatland’s final chance to make key decisions and the players’ last opportunity to book their seats on the plane and touchdown in the land of the long white cloud.
“Argentina are really strong opponents, particularly up front and very hard to break down,” added Gatland.
“This will be our final game on home soil, the last chance for the players to impress before RWC selection which must be completed 48 hours later and our final chance as coaches to make some tough decisions.
“It’s also the last chance for the fans to show their support and give a final send-off before we travel to the other side of the world to represent Wales at the biggest tournament in rugby.”
Tickets remaining for the summer RWC warm-up fixtures against the Barbarians and England at the Millennium Stadium are priced at £40 and £30 for adults, £100 for a family ticket (2 adults 2 children) for the Baa Baas game and £110 family ticket for the England match, with a new category introduced this season of £15 for the under 18s enclosure.
The final game on homes soil against Argentina is even cheaper at £30 and £20 for adults, £70 for a family of four and £15 for the under 18s enclosure.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.wru.co.uk/tickets from 12 noon tomorrow or by calling the ticket hotline 08442 777 888.
