WALES REVAMP FOR ALL BLACKS CLASH

Wales have brought Blues wing Tom James straight into their starting line-up as they make wholesale changes for the final Invesco Perpetual Series ’10 clash, with New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday – leaving just three players in place from the 16 – 16 draw with Fiji last time out.
Scarlets wing George North and Ospreys duo Lee Byrne (full back) and Adam Jones (prop) are the only players retained in their starting positions, although both Ryan Jones (Ospreys) and Dan Lydiate (Dragons) keep their places in a back row re-shuffled to accommodate Blues flanker Sam Warburton on the openside and Jones at No 8.
Warburton’s return from injury is a boost to head coach Warren Gatland’s squad, as is his regional colleague Gethin Jenkins’ return to fitness – both from calf injuries – in time to face the All Blacks.
Jenkins slots into the front row alongside Scarlets and Wales captain Matthew Rees, who returns at hooker.
It’s all change in the second row with the pairing against both Australia (a 16-25 loss) and South Africa (a close fought 25-29 defeat) earlier in the series, Blues lock Bradley Davies and Osprey captain Alun Wyn Jones, reunited.
Half backs Stephen Jones (Scarlets) and Mike Phillips (Ospreys) are recalled after also starting Wales’ first two matches of the campaign.
Elsewhere in the backs the centre pairing of Tom Shanklin (Blues) and James Hook (Ospreys) is another that is re-united from the Springboks outing, although both players also faced the Wallabies, with Hook at full back on that occasion.
And James, who was called up to the Wales squad on Monday, is handed a starting spot after last featuring during the RBS Six Nations outing against England nine months ago.
The Blues flyer directly replaces Aled Brew (Dragons) who filled the berth vacated by injured Osprey Shane Williams (shoulder) against Fiji.
On the bench Wales have opted for a five forwards and two backs split with Andy Powell (Wasps), returning from a groin problem to join Martyn Williams (Blues) and Jonathan Thomas (Ospreys) providing cover across the back row, with Thomas as well as the starting Jones both able to fill in at lock.
The front row is supported by prop Paul James and hooker Huw Bennett, both Ospreys, and their regional colleague Andrew Bishop provides cover for the backs alongside scrum half Richie Rees (Blues).
“Back row is one position where we have a great deal of competition for places, with Dan Lydiate going particularly well at the moment,”said Gatland.
“Sam Warburton gets his chance to start and Ryan Jones, having not played a lot of rugby this season, has a chance to play at No 8, but we are also conscious that we have a strong bench to call on to come on and make an impact in that area.
“With the likes of Martyn Williams, Andy Powell and Jonathan Thomas all giving us options.
“We have tried something a little different in that area with a five/two split as we know we will need to be at maximum intensity for the full 80 minutes against the All Blacks.
“Gethin Jenkins is back in the front row, Matthew Rees also returns and with Adam Jones in the best shape I’ve seen him in we know we are strong there.
“We are very happy with the tight five and we have two young physical locks who are getting better with every game.
“Tom James was injured when we named the squad at the start of the series, but he did well for the Blues last Friday night in the game against Ulster, scoring a try in a game they should have won. He has genuine pace and that along with size and physicality and some experience at this level are what we are going to need against New Zealand.
“We were all disappointed last week when we made a number of changes which we thought we could cope with. We found out we couldn’t, but we hope to be back firing on all cylinders this week. ”
WALES: Lee Byrne; George North, Tom Shanklin, James Hook, Tom James; Stephen Jones, Mike Phillips; Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees (c), Adam Jones, Bradley Davies, Alun Wyn Jones, Dan Lydiate, Sam Warburton, Ryan Jones
Replacements: Huw Bennett, Paul James, Jonathan Thomas, Andy Powell, Martyn Williams, Richie Rees, Andrew Bishop

Blues name side for Sunday’s match

Cardiff Blues welcome Ulster to the Cardiff City Stadium for Sunday’s Magners League encounter buoyed the fact they have lost just one of their last five matches in the Magners League.
The Blues have won four of their last five games against Irish opponents and have won their last seven matches against Ulster, however, Blues Director of Rugby David Young is taking nothing for granted,
"Ulster have spent a lot of money and obviously are a team that want to get back to the top where they were a couple of seasons ago,” said Young.
“They have a strong squad and have picked up a lot of wins this season, so I think it will be a difficult game for us.”
“I don’t think they are burdened with a lot of international withdrawals, so we know we are up against a very strong team and they will probably feel it’s a good time to come to Cardiff with so many of our internationals away.”
“Ulster are always strong up front and the players they have brought in have only added to that.”
“They also have plenty of flair behind and strike me as a very determined outfit.”
“I’ve been very impressed with the way they play and it will take a good team to beat them.”
"They’ve had some good performances and one or two narrow losses as well, but they’ve always been in every game they’ve played.”

Speaking of the Blues form this season Young added,
“We’ve had some good results in the Magners League without really playing as well as we would have liked.”
“Against Aironi we put in a very positive performance and the players showed a lot of hurt and determination. So I’d like to think we can start against Ulster where we finished in Italy.”
“We played a very simple game plan that day but are looking to expand our game with some big matches coming up over the next six to eight weeks.”
The Blues welcome back a number of experienced players with Chris Czekaj, Casey Laulala and Ceri Sweeney returning in the backs. Tom Slater starts at scrum half in place of the injured Lloyd Williams.
In the forwards there is a new back row with Rush, Paterson and Molitika starting and Paul Tito captains the side from the second row. The Blues also welcome back Taufa’ao Filise from injury, with T Rhys Thomas also starting at Hooker.
The Blues will be holding their fourth Regional Clubs Day at the match, which kicks off at 3.45pm, and thousands of young supporters are expected to be at the ground. A record 29 clubs from as far afield as Crickhowell and Gwernyfed in Powys have taken advantage of the ticket offer so it promises to be a great occasion.
At half time there will be a regional clubs parade with representatives from the clubs in attendance walking around the outside of the pitch. As well as this will be the event now synonymous with regional clubs day, the annual mascot race.

WALES MAKE FOUR CHANGES FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Wales have made four changes, one positional, to their starting line-up for the visit of the World Champion South Africans to the Millennium Stadium on Saturday following defeat to Australia in the Invesco Perpetual Series opener last weekend.
Lee Byrne returns from injury to fill the full-back birth leaving Ospreys colleague James Hook to take up his position at inside centre, partnering Blues stalwart Tom Shanklin at the expense of another Osprey Andrew Bishop who moves to the bench.
The other change in the backline sees uncapped Scarlets wing and former Llandovery and Scarlets Academy player George North handed his first international chance, and become Wales' 1,078th player, at just 18 years of age.
Up front the coaches have said same again to the forward pack, led by captain Matthew Rees, which impressed against the Wallabies last time out with the exception of Martyn Williams who returns in the back row for his 97th cap in place of his injured Blues colleague Sam Warburton (calf).
Elsewhere, Ryan Jones (Ospreys) and Andy Powell (Wasps) both return to bench duty in place of the promoted Williams and Dieniol Jones (Blues), who misses out, while Ospreys pivot Dan Biggar makes way for Bishop.
"We worked hard last week on ensuring we were combative up front, we put a huge emphasis on forward play in training and we now know we can bring that kind of game into play when necessary," said Gatland.
"We were happy with aspects of our performance against Australia, but you can't work on everything in just a two week build up and we have been able to introduce new aspects this week.
The coaches have told the players they have a licence to be creative, to be confident with the ball in hand, to offload and to be positive in attack, we need to build on that performance last week.
"We know this is a bold selection, but we have always tried to look at the bigger picture and George (North), today, is the bigger picture and at 6ft 4 inches and 16stone 7lbs he gives us quite a canvass to work with.
"There is no pressure on him, he just needs to go out and enjoy the experience of winning his first cap.
"With Lee Byrne back at full-back and James Hook hopefully with the ball in his hands more often at centre we have plenty of experience and guile around in our back line and are simply looking for the same again up front."

WALES: 15 Lee Byrne; 14 George North, 13 Tom Shanklin, 12 James Hook, 11 Shane Williams; 10 Stephen Jones, 9 Mike Phillips; Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees (C), Adam Jones, Bradley Davies, Alun Wyn Jones, Dan Lydiate, Martyn Williams, Jonathan Thomas

Replacements: 16 Huw Bennett, 17 Paul James, 18 Ryan Jones, 19 Andy Powell, 20 Richie Rees, 21 Andrew Bishop, 22 Chris Czekaj

Wales 16 v 25 Australia - Match Report

Australia justified their position as arguably the world's number one side with a commanding performance over Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.  However, Wales were missing a number of key individuals and put up a valiant effort, at least crossing the line and scoring two penalties.

Wales took an early lead thanks to a Stephen Jones penalty, but the lead was short-lived as David Pocock went over; young winger James O'Connor converted.  It would have been easy at this point to capitulate after such a pounding early on, but Wales now piled on the pressure themselves, going through fifteen phases to threaten the Aussie line.  However, the move broke down after Sam Warburton was penalised.

Stephen Jones missed a normally regulation penalty after the Australian scrum was penalised, but made amends soon after to make it 7-6. Just before the break he missed another, which would have given the Welsh a boost.

The second half began in the same vein as the first with Australia immediately exerting pressure on the Welsh line and Faingaa went over, only to have his try ruled out thanks to a double movement. But it was to be just a brief respite as a lucky ricochet off Bradley Davies fell into the arms of scrum-half Geniam who passed to James O'Connor and on to man of the match, full back, Kurtley Beale. O'Connor converted.  Another try followed soon after from Ben Alexander and with a penalty on the board, Australia led 22-9.

Tom Shanklin was sin-sinned for taking out Pocock before he received the ball and this could have opened the floodgates for Australia, but in fact it was the spur needed for Wales to recover.  Richie Rees, on for Mike Philips, inspired an assault on the Australian line, resulting in a try for the replacement from Cardiff Blues. Fellow substitute, Dan Biggar, converted, but a late penalty from O'Connor sealed the win for Australia.

Wales will need to fix serious problems with their line out before the visit of the Springboks next Saturday and Australia's scrum, members of which were lucky not to end up in the sin bin, let alone give away a penalty try, will have to be far more disciplined.
Tune in to the Radio Cardiff Sports Show this Tuesday at 7pm for a full match reaction - 98.7FM and online http://www.radiocardiff.org.uk/.

GATLAND’S YOUNG GUNS TAKE SHAPE FOR NEW LOOK WALES

Wales have named a starting XV to face Australia in the opening Invesco Perpetual Series ’10 clash at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday which features just three players over the age of 30 – with all three in the back division.

Wing wizard Shane Williams (33), centre Tom Shanklin (31) and outside half Stephen Jones (33) represent the old guard in a backline which retains just one player – scrum-half Mike Phillips – from that which faced New Zealand last time out on Wales’ summer tour.

Young Dragons flier Will Harries partners Osprey Williams on the wing and fellow Osprey James Hook completes the back three by taking his place at full-back, while another Osprey Andrew Bishop partners Shanklin in the centre.

Up front the British and Irish Lions front row of Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees and Adam Jones is reunited with Scarlets captain Rees assuming the leadership duties of his national side for the first time.

The second row pairing of Alun Wyn Jones and Bradley Davies is retained from the All Blacks match and another young Dragon Dan Lydiate (23) joins the youngest player in the starting line-up, Blues flanker Sam Warburton, in the back row.

Osprey Jonathan Thomas is the last of just six players – alongside front rowers Jones and Rees, locks Davies and Jones and scrum half Phillips - to be retained from that final match of the summer tour, but he undergoes a positional switch to start at No 8.

From the bench veteran Martyn Williams could win his 100th international cap – including Lions Tests – and he is joined in backing up the forwards by Ospreys pair Huw Bennett (hooker) and Paul James (prop) and Blues colleague, second row, Deiniol Jones.

Blues pair Chris Czekaj (wing) and Richie Rees (scrum-half) are joined by Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar to cover the backs.

“The front five virtually picks itself, when they’re all fit and playing well,” said Gatland.

“There’s two young boys in the second row there who have been going really well, Bradley in particular is in great shape and we will be looking to get the ball in his hands as much as possible, he is a real player for the future.

“There was debate in the back row and we decided we wanted to have another look at Sam who hasn’t played for us since South Africa in the summer, when he did very well.

“We had options on the wing as well and we thought about Chris Czekaj at full back but in the end we’ve gone for experience there with James Hook and that then gives us a centre combination which retains experience too.

“At scrum-half Richie Rees has been putting pressure on Mike Phillips with some dynamic performances for the Blues so it’s a big game for Mike, we are looking for him to be physical and really lead the way.

“We are still hurting as a squad from the way the Wallabies beat us last year. They were impressive as a forward pack and they repeatedly won turnover ball which gave them the game.

“It’s tough times out there for everyone at the moment and those fans who have put their hands in their pockets to support Wales have made a real commitment to the cause already.

“We spoke this week about the responsibility we have to those fans now to perform.”

Wales: James Hook; Will Harries, Tom Shanklin, Andrew Bishop, Shane Williams, Stephen Jones, Mike Phillips; Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees (c), Adam Jones, Bradley Davies, Alun Wyn Jones, Dan Lydiate, Sam Warburton, Jonathan Thomas

Replacements: Huw Bennett, Paul James, Deiniol Jones, Martyn Williams, Richie Rees, Dan Biggar, Chris Czekaj
