TIGER BAY BRAWLERS TO INSPIRE NEW JUNIOR ROLLER DERBY CLUB

Sport.Cardiff will this month launch a new junior roller derby club in partnership with the Tiger Bay Brawlers. The exciting project will be the first in Wales to link with the renowned Cardiff based club.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track.

The game consists of a series of short ‘jams’ in which both teams designate a scoring player who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. Roller derby originated in America in the 1930s and is now played by 1,000 amateur leagues on every inhabited continent.

The Tiger Bay Brawlers were founded in April 2010 and were the first Welsh league to affiliate to the UK Roller Derby Association. They now compete with teams all over the UK.

The new roller derby provision is part of the Sport.Cardiff 5x60 school sports development programme. The 5x60 initiative is a Welsh Government funded programme available to schools across Cardiff which encourages children to take part in 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week.

It comprises a variety of different activities from which the children choose what they want to participate in. Activities include competitive, team and individual sports as well recreational activities such as climbing, dance and swimming. The new junior club will give children and young people from secondary schools around the city the opportunity to try out this exciting sport which they may usually not have access to.

It is an opportunity to get a feel for roller derby and a chance for participants to go on and join the Tiger Bay Brawlers club. Sessions will be held from Wednesday 25 January, 2012 at Cardiff and Vale College, Trowbridge, formally Coleg Glan Hafren.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “Sport.Cardiff continue to deliver inspiring and original sports provision to school children across Cardiff. It is fantastic that young people can experience new and unique sports such as roller derby, and allows new opportunities to participate in club activity in the future.”

Tiger Bay Brawlers coach Judge Redd, said: “We're thrilled to be the first league in Wales to become affiliated with junior derby. Hopefully this will be the start of an ongoing venture between the Tiger Bay Brawlers and schools in Cardiff, and pave the way for junior leagues to establish. Who knows, we could be training the roller derby stars of the future, and that's really exciting!"
