Eagles win local derby

The Eagles took a tight and entertaining match against local rivals the Cardiff Ice Hounds 7-6 winning with only 16 seconds to spare.

The first period ended 2-2 with goals from captain Jon Griffiths and Ben Begley and the second period saw a single marker from each side the Eagles goal coming from Mike Gregory.

The third period saw the Eagles go behind 6-5 after a goal from player coach Dan Salisbury looked to be the only goal in the period for the Eagles. However with 16 seconds to go and trailing 5-6 the Eagles pulled their netminder for an extra skater and scored almost immediately with Ben Begley getting his second of the match to make it 6-6. Jon Griffiths then wasted no time in getting his hatrick scoring the winning goal with seconds remaining to send the Cardiff Arena into a frenzy.

The game was extremely hard fought and either side could easily have taken the ‘W’

Stand out performances for both teams came from David Owen of the Icehounds and Jon Griffiths of the Eagles both getting a hatrick, with Man of the match for the Cardiff Eagles going to netminder Jamie Swistun and for the Cardiff Ice Hounds it went to James Hall.
