Cardiff City 1 v 1 Leeds United - MATCH REPORT
By Yousef Haider at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Cardiff vs Leeds, a fixture that always brings a smile to Cardiff city fans faces. At the old Ninian park, in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, a then lowly cardiff city managed to beat a, then, high flying Leeds united 2-1. A result that was a highlight for many fans for a long time. Long before Cardiff took part time residency at wembley, it was a stand out moment.
Leeds where then THE team in england. A star studded squad, a brilliant young manager, and top level european football.
Since then much has happened, Leeds ended up below Cardiff after a double relegation, but clashes between the two have always been competitive.
Today encounter marked a second opportunity for home fans to commemorate the passing of City legend Eddie May who sadly passed away, which was done in typical Bluebird fashion.
It also potentially marked a conclusion of sorts to Cardiff's promotion campaign.
A win would guarantee a play off spot, although with Reading spectacularly being the first team to get promoted to the Premiership this season, and Southampton looking likely to be the second, the play off"s look a daunting proposition this season, with the likes of West Ham and Birmingham having squads that rival most Premiership sides.
There were no changes from the midweek victory over Derby, and the manager had somehow resisted the urge to put Mark Hudson up front, after his spectacular strike from his own half. It was Miller and Mason up front.
The first 20 minutes were pretty uneventful with Cardiff creating the better chances, although neither keeper had a proper save to make.
The first noteworthy moment unfortunately was a terrible injury to Leigh Bromby. Although it was difficult to tell exactly what had happened, his team mates were visibly distressed, and eventually the crowd of physios and paramedics carried him off the pitch on a stretcher and he was replaced. Get well soon Leigh.
The match resumed, and with it, the same ebb and flow. Much a do about nothing, with Cardiff creating the better of the play, with neither Keeper actually having to save anything.
Just as me and a colleague commented on the fact that with only one shot of any meaning, it had still been a reasonably entertaining half, far from the best, but not the worst half of football we had ever seen, a ball, from no where travelled pretty much the entire length of the pitch from the back left position to the front right, and dropped for Joe Mason, who lobbed it across goal, over the keeper and in for his 12th goal of the season.
Cardiff 1-0 Leeds
The match all of a sudden came to life as you would expect, and cardiff were in command. Half time beckoned, however due to the injury, 6 minutes of injury time were added on.
Cardiff created chance after chance, Kenny Miller blasting one over, Wittingham tried to play him through, just to much on the ball, then Wittingham tried again, found his man, and Miller blasted it at the keeper.
Still 1-0 but we had a game to watch now. Cardiff could have gone in 2-0 up, but they were no doubt happy to be heading in with the lead.
The second half resumed, and Leeds created their best opportunity so far. A header from a cross......over the bar. Still no real trouble for Marshall.
At the other end a penalty claim turned down for Cardiff, and Kenny Miller was put through but ruled offside.
Cardiff were very much in charge of proceedings and a cross from the right found the head of Mark Hudson, who nearly scored in back to back games but unfortunatley put his header over the bar.
The noise picked up in the second half, after the first being all but silent from the city fans. Maybe it was nerves, but now the fans were counting down the minutes, 30 minutes, half an hour away from being guaranteed a play off spot. All the. Hard work was paying off. This would make it three years in a row for Cardiff, third time lucky? Three times for a Welshman, as the not so famous saying goes....
With 20 minutes to go, Andre Taylor drilled a volley across goal, and produced what must have been one of the saves of the season, from near enough point blank range.
Cardiff were in control, but I kept thinking that Marshall is yet to be tested, and City really needed that crucial second goal to secure the points and the playoffs!
Unfortunately, rather prophetically, the first shot on target that they had, they scored.
Snodgrass kept the ball in play on the touchline, hustled a cross, which was blocked and the second ball came in and was delicately headed into the net from less than a yard.
Marshall still hadn't made a save.
Cardiff 1-1 Leeds
Now surely this game would be on fire. For the remaining 15 minutes.
After a succession of corners, Joe Mason miss hit a shot, Ben Turner headed across goal, someone missed an overhead kick, and Kenny Miller found the net. After the whistle, a penalty claim was turned down, and at the other end Ben Turner again involved, this time making a crucial sliding tackle to halt a Leeds counter attack in its tracks.
10 minutes to go.
There was much huffing and puffing, but the clock was already on 90 minutes when Kenny Miller made way for Robert Earnshaw, and then a minute later Darcy Blake came on for Kevin McNaughton.
The match petered out and the whistle blew. It was a draw that felt like a loss considering what was on offer but the season isn't over yet.

HOWLEY TO STEP UP AS WALES CARETAKER COACH IMMEDIATELY
The Welsh Rugby Union has appointed Rob Howley as Caretaker Head Coach of Wales for the forthcoming summer internationals against the Barbarians and Australia to allow Warren Gatland to focus on recovering from injuries suffered in an accident at home in New Zealand.
Howley will have full control of all aspects of team preparation and selection as he takes charge of the existing management and coaching staff with immediate effect.
Gatland has declared his full approval of the decision which was taken during discussions with WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis about his prognosis for recuperation and recovery over the weeks ahead.
Lewis says the decision will offer certainty to players, coaches and supporters as the preparations and planning for the matches now enter an important preliminary phase.
The decision was taken after medical advice given to Gatland and his family in New Zealand was set against the huge scale and importance of the summer series of games in 2012.
Wales will play the Barbarians on June 2 (kick off 2.00pm) in a full international before the start of the biggest ever one-nation tour in the history of the Welsh Rugby Union outside a Rugby World Cup campaign.
Wales play an unprecedented three Test matches against Australia plus a midweek fixture against the Brumbies between the first and second Test.
Doctors have ruled out a return to Wales for Gatland in time for the Barbarians international and the latest medical advice is that he is unlikely to have recuperated sufficiently to take charge of Wales in Australia before the first Test match in Brisbane on June 9.
If Gatland recovers in time to join the squad for the final two June Test matches Howley will remain as caretaker with the Head Coach playing a supportive role.
Howley will continue to liaise directly with Warren Gatland throughout his current phase of recuperation, but the pair have agreed that the caretaker coach will make the final decisions required.

Blues name side for Ospreys encounter
Cardiff Blues have made five changes ahead of their big Welsh derby match against the Ospreys.
There are three changes in the backs to the team that lost to Leinster, with Harry Robinson returning from Wales 7’s duties to start on the wing in place of Tom James, who is out with a neck injury. Gavin Evans, who this week announced he has signed a new two year deal with the Blues, starts at outside centre with Casey Laulala moving to the bench. Ceri Sweeney starts at 10 with Dan Parks also moving to the bench.
There are two changes in the forwards with John Yapp replacing Gethin Jenkins who is out with shoulder injury and Luke Hamilton, who makes his RaboDirect debut, starting at Number 8 instead of Xavier Rush who is out with a neck injury. There is no place for Chris Czekaj in the 23.
The Blues will be looking to get back to winning ways and take on an Ospreys side that have won their last two games in the RaboDirect PRO12 against Leinster and Treviso.
Speaking ahead of the match Cardiff Blues Backs Coach, Gareth Baber, said:
“This weekend’s match is sure to be another heated Welsh derby with the Ospreys looking to get a win that will keep them in the top two of the RaboDirect PRO12 table.”
“Knowing this and the frustration from not having a long run of wins behind us has really motivated the team this week to play a good game.”
“The Ospreys have a great group of players and we know it will be a tough battle.”
“However, we will be looking for a big response from the Blues players.”

Warren Gatland - WRU Statement
The Welsh Rugby Union has put plans in place for some senior squad preparatory coaching functions to be managed internally by Warren Gatland’s assistants as he recovers from an accident suffered during a family visit to New Zealand over Easter.
His return to Wales has been delayed as he recovers from leg injuries sustained in a fall while working at his family beach house on Waihi Beach at around 8.30am (New Zealand time) last Easter Monday morning.
He was cleaning windows when he lost his balance and fell three metres onto concrete taking the full impact on his heels. He suffered multiple fractures to the right calcaneus and also a fracture to the left calcaneus. Consequently, he is in leg casts and requires surgery by the leading orthopaedic surgeon in the Waikato to reconstruct his right heel.
The injury he suffered is not expected to have any major impact on the continuing preparations for scheduled Wales matches in June 2012.
While in New Zealand Gatland will continue to receive information primarily from Rob Howley, Robin McBryde, Shaun Edwards and Neil Jenkins as they observe and monitor squad players and potential players over the next few weeks.
Further information gathered by the Head of Physical Performance, Adam Beard, Head of Performance Analysis, Rhys Long and National Medical Performance Manager, Prav Mathema, will also be sent directly to Gatland.
Assistant Coach Rob Howley will oversee day-to-day management of the coaching staff in Wales and will play a key role in liaising between the Wales based staff and the Head Coach during Gatland’s temporary absence from camp. Team Manager Alan Phillips will keep the Head Coach informed of all other squad preparation issues.
The WRU Group Chief Executive, Roger Lewis, has approved the plan for temporary injury cover and he has indicated that although there is no current requirement for any of the staff to be appointed caretaker Head Coach he and Gatland have agreed to recommend to the WRU Board that Howley would fill the role if required.
Although it could be several weeks before he fully recovers he is expected to be able to return to active coaching duties before his recuperation is complete.
Roger Lewis said: “We all wish Warren a speedy recovery from the injuries he has suffered in this extremely unfortunate accident.
“Knowing Warren as I do I can reassure the Welsh rugby public that he has diligently put the people and processes in place to ensure he stays closely linked to what is happening in the game back here in Wales.
”I have spoken to Warren on a number of occasions since his fall and have told him he will lead the tour to Australia unless anything unforeseen happens in the prognosis for recovery we are working to.”
Eagles win local derby
The first period ended 2-2 with goals from captain Jon Griffiths and Ben Begley and the second period saw a single marker from each side the Eagles goal coming from Mike Gregory.
The third period saw the Eagles go behind 6-5 after a goal from player coach Dan Salisbury looked to be the only goal in the period for the Eagles. However with 16 seconds to go and trailing 5-6 the Eagles pulled their netminder for an extra skater and scored almost immediately with Ben Begley getting his second of the match to make it 6-6. Jon Griffiths then wasted no time in getting his hatrick scoring the winning goal with seconds remaining to send the Cardiff Arena into a frenzy.
The game was extremely hard fought and either side could easily have taken the ‘W’
Stand out performances for both teams came from David Owen of the Icehounds and Jon Griffiths of the Eagles both getting a hatrick, with Man of the match for the Cardiff Eagles going to netminder Jamie Swistun and for the Cardiff Ice Hounds it went to James Hall.

There is a new back row to the team that lost to Glasgow with Xavier Rush returning to the team following the birth of his baby boy last Friday. He is joined by Martyn Williams who has recovered from a rib injury and Michael Paterson who has recovered from a shoulder injury. There are two changes in the front row with Marc Breeze starting for the injured Ryan Tyrell and Gethin Jenkins coming in for John Yapp.
There are two changes in the backs with Dafydd Hewitt coming in for the injured Jamie Roberts and Dan Parks replacing Ceri Sweeney.
Speaking ahead of the match Cardiff Blues Backs Coach Gareth Baber said,
"It has been documented that Jamie is injured, which is a blow for us, but we have two players, Dafydd Hewitt and Gavin Evans, who have epitomised exactly the culture that Justin and I are trying to develop here."
"Players who want to make sure we go as far as we can as a group and are professional until the end."
"These are two players you need around your group to push them on, you also have people like Gethin Jenkins and Michael Paterson who are ultimate competitors, who want to be recognised for how competitive they are."
"They are solely focused on making sure there is a performance from ourselves at the Aviva."
Justin Burnell Cardiff Blues Forwards Coach added,
"The real focus this week is getting back in to the mind set we were in at the pool stages of the Heineken group, when we won five out of six."
"When you think about it we have the likes of Cuthbert, Halfpenny, Casey Laulala and Tom James, who can match them in the wide and individual channels, if the possession is right. It's something we are confident we can put right before the weekend."15. Leigh Halfpenny 14. Alex Cuthbert 13. Casey Laulala 12. Dafydd Hewitt 11. Tom James 10. Dan Parks 9. Lloyd Williams

Gavin Henson dismissed with immediate effect
Following a management meeting on Monday morning Cardiff Blues can confirm that Gavin Henson has been dismissed with immediate effect
Speaking of the decision Cardiff Blues CEO Richard Holland said,
“The Cardiff Blues management have discussed the matter at length but have acted swiftly since the incident occurred on Saturday morning.”
“Gavin admitted himself that his behaviour was totally unacceptable and the immediate termination of his contract sends out a clear message that behaviour like that will not be tolerated at the Blues.”
“We have a duty to our supporters and sponsors to protect the good name of Cardiff Blues and those associated with our brand.”
“Gavin Henson is obviously a talented rugby player and it’s unfortunate that his career at the Blues has ended this way.”
“However, we would like to thank him for his service and wish him the best of luck with his future career.”
Cardiff Blues have no further comment to make on the matter and will not be accepting interview requests regarding the matter.

Gavin Henson apologises for behaviour
Following the news that Gavin Henson has been suspended with immediate effect the Cardiff Blues utility back has issued the following statement
“I am releasing this statement in relation to the press reports and the fact that I have been suspended by the Cardiff Blues for drinking on a flight returning to Cardiff from Glasgow on Saturday 31st March.”
“I would like to publicly apologise for drinking on that flight.”
“I admit I had been out drinking in Glasgow on the Friday night following our game against Glasgow Warriors and had stupidly carried on drinking on the flight, for which I am truly embarrassed about.”
“I can see that drinking and behaving inappropriately on that flight as a professional sportsman at 7am has caused offence to members of the public, the Flybe Airline staff and passengers.”
“I know that I have let my team mates, coaches, management, sponsors and indeed my family down with my actions. Drinking on that plane was inexcusable and I know that I must take responsibility for it.”
“I also accept that in the light of this I need to learn from it and ensure this does not happen again.”
“I am prepared to co operate 100% with the Cardiff Blues wishes and will do everything that I need to do in order to make amends and enable the Blues to focus on our biggest game of the season next weekend.”
“I remain fully focused and committed to Cardiff Blues and I hope they can accept my apology.” concluded Henson.
The Cardiff Blues management team will meet first thing Monday morning to discuss the matter further.
