West Wales side express Championships interest

Carmarthen based CPC Bears Rugby League club have officially expressed an interest in joining the Co-operative Championships in 2013 to represent the three most western counties of Wales - Carmarthenshire Pembrokeshire & Ceredigion.

The club was formed in 2010 to bring together the club structure in West Wales and the senior side is currently playing in Co-operative Rugby League Conference Welsh Premier whilst their Under 18s side plays in the Gillette Conference Youth League.

CPC Bears Chairman Geraint Jones said: “We believe there are the player numbers and supporters in West Wales to support the CPC Bears in the Championships. Rugby is massively popular in the area and with Rugby League being a summer sport there is room for both.

“We would bring a very open Welsh style of Rugby as a fresh new club with a fresh outlook, new faces and interesting new people.

“There have been a few stop start teams in West Wales in recent history but we see CPC Bears representing the three West Wales counties of Carmarthenshire Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion which is a very passionate area within Wales like Cumbria in England.

“There would be guaranteed rivalry and healthy competition with the South Wales Scorpions which would enhance Rugby League in the area and provide more opportunities to watch the sport. There’s nothing like a bit of local rivalry to create interest.

“We currently run teams at Under 12, 14, 15 and 17 as well as the under 18s side in the Conference Youth League and have good links with the local schools in the area that are doing well in the Champion Schools Tournament.

“There would be a real West Wales flavour to the whole setup and we would also be looking to bring on board commercial sponsors from this area.”

Expressions of interest are currently being sought by the RFL from any clubs in the UK that are interested in joining the Co-operative Championships between 2012 and 2015.

The RFL has announced that it intends to further expand the Co-operative Championships during this period and the initial deadline for expression of interest submissions from clubs is 12.00pm on April 15.

Clubs are asked to express their interest by April 11 by e-mailing Chris Thair in the RFL’s Club Support Unit, chris.thair@rfl.uk.com.
